Who We Are

Bowmanville Baptist Church is affiliated with the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada (FEBCC). Our church was started as a Sunday School mission of Calvary Baptist Church, Oshawa, in the 1930s. By God's grace we subsequently grew to form our own local church. For some time we worshipped on Nelson St in an Adventist Chapel that had been moved all the way down from Solina! However, the Lord prospered his work among us to the extent that we were able to construct our own building at our current location. We have been here on Concession Road No. 3 since 1977.

We are a church in the Reformed Baptist tradition. We seek to conform our teaching and life to God's Word as the Spirit has revealed it in the Scriptures and in Jesus Christ. We are dedicated to the practical preaching and teaching of God's word which reflects both his glorious grace shown to us in Christ and his call on us as disciples to live obedient to Christ's teaching. We are committed to ongoing development of activities that meet the spiritual and physical needs of our people and of the community. Our goal is not so much to make the gospel relevant (it needs no such help!) as to make our lives, and the lives of all those whom God calls to follow Jesus with us, relevant to the gospel, which is the good news of God's forgiveness of sinners in Jesus Christ his Son, and his adoption in him of us as his children.

As a church affiliated with the FEBCC, we adhere to that body's Affirmation of Faith, which we find to be a solid expression of Baptist faith and practice. We ask also that our pastor and deacons be in agreement with the doctrines set forth in the Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689. This has been the definitive confession of the Particular or Calvinistic Baptist churches. This same teaching was later adopted in North America and expressed in The Philadelphia Confession of Faith of 1744. Many "Reformed Baptist" churches continue to subscribe to the doctrines set forth in these confessions, humbly believing them to be the faithful teaching of God's Word. We maintain it to be a trustworthy guide in understanding and obeying God's will in our life together.

What We Are Like

Our church is on the small side and our worship is simple and traditional: Scripture reading, preaching, prayer, and congregational singing of hymns ancient and modern. We keep the sacraments of believer's baptism and the Lord's Table (communion), the latter being kept on the first Sunday of the month. Our members take up a weekly offering to support the Lord's work (our guests we ask only to put a visitor's card in the plate, if they wish). We offer ministries to children and youth, to ladies (Wednesday Bible study) and to the men (Men's breakfast, every second Saturday of the month). We hold weekly home small group meetings. We hold a soup and sandwich fellowship luncheon every third Sunday after the morning service.

Our church is involved in local community, participating in events such as Applefest and supporting the local Salvation Army food bank. We are represented on the Bowmanville Ministerial Association and our pastor serves at the hospital on the Spiritual Care Board and as an on-call chaplain.

What We Would Like

We seek to see the Father glorified in our lives and in our church by our humble and joyful obedience to his commandments and our complete reliance on the grace he's shown us in his Son. We plead with God to call our neighbours to repentance and faith as well, that they might know the joy and release of salvation and peace with God, and that together we might sing his praises. We want to have the opportunity to present the glorious Redeemer, Jesus the Son of God, to those who do not yet know him.

We would invite you, if you do follow the Saviour and don't have a local church, to come join us in this mission. We would invite you, if you do not follow Jesus, to permit us to attempt, by the Spirit, to present him in all his glory and mercy
